PHARMACOSE a band that has emotionally tells you a story into the world of mental illness from suffering of bipolar disorder and the side of effects of medications linked to that disorder, on the bands EP, PRESCRIPTION FICTION VOL. 1 The band hails from Jacksonville, FL and not only do they create lyrical content that relates to many suffering from these very important disorders, but they wrap a solid rock n roll vibe to the stories that not only uplifts you but sends you on a voyage of airy, vibrant and sonically elegant soundscapes. It was a pleasure getting to deepen myself into the music on the bands newly released EP, PRESCRIPTION FICTION VOL. 1 but also getting to chat with frontman Wes Jones about the subject matter, how the rest of his band members found him and created Pharmacose, new music and other interesting things about this up n coming frontman and band. 🎼 PHARMACOSE is a pretty intense band name especially linking the words Pharmaceutical and Comatose together. What does this band name mean to you as a founder of the band? Wes: I came up with the name when I was reflecting on my medication regimen. It had really just gotten optimized. It takes a while. They have good, cheap medicine to control the mania, but the depression is a different animal. So, for a while, I was kind of on the low end of the spectrum, and it was draining. I was resentful of my diagnosis because I just didn’t feel quite right. I started to wonder if I was always going to feel that way. Eventually things improved when the regimen got tweaked, so I started to feel a lot better. 🎼 Was it true you almost gave up on music and what moment was it that made you realize this could be an outlet to help others and how empowering has it been writing and finishing this EP PRESCRIPTION FICTION VOL. 1? Very true. I think the diagnosis really shook my foundations. I started to feel like life was too short not to pursue something you’re passionate about. I met Lu Rubino, our producer and bassist, through a friend near the end of 2017 and we’ve been working together ever since, but it’s taken a while to get to this point. I just hope that people who are struggling listen and feel like they are not alone. Hopefully, it will inspire those people to get help if they need it. 🎼 Your story about being depressive through your life and then being diagnosed with Bi Polar disorder what can you tell people who are dealing with feelings of lost loneliness and how important is it for them to get help and any prominent first steps to do especially in this day and age? I think that although things have come a long way with regard to stigma, the stigma is still there, and it makes the initial first step to getting help difficult, maybe even to the point where they don’t get help until they have self-harmed. Also, when you are depressed, you just don’t want to do anything. You feel hopeless, and that can impede the first step as well. I hope our music can give those people who happen to listen that initial push they need to set them on the path to treatment. 🎼 What is your background as a musician I heard you were in Chicago making music before heading to Florida. Why the state change and how do you view this band and your old band? I grew up playing violin, playing in orchestras through college. I picked up the guitar somewhere along the way though, and violin took a backseat after I graduated. I moved to Florida from Chicago for work. I also got sick of the cold! I played with a punk band up there called Cuddle Riot, but I also did my own thing with a couple of friends. We called ourselves Harbourview. Some of the music from Harbourview has made its way to Pharmacose. Those were the songs I initially took to Lu to record. 🎼 Another interesting thing I heard about you is you’re a forensic doctor? Is this true and what has your life been like in 2020 with everything going on? Not quite! I am a pathologist, but I do surgical pathology mostly. We examine tissue—biopsies, cancer resections, that sort of thing—under the microscope and diagnose disease. Our practice is dependent on elective surgeries, so when those got canceled, we got really slow. Basically part-time. Things have picked back up, though. 🎼 Your new EP PRESCRIPTION FICTION VOL. 1 and most recently your new video for CHECKED OUT the bands 2nd single not only talks about these important topics but in the video you visual bring it to life. How important was it for you to create a video like this? It was important to be to give some visual imagery to the message. I don’t feel like we always have to talk about mental illness, but I think it’s definitely part of our roots. So, I think to try to bring that to life in a video was an important step for us. I think it adds more to the message. 🎼 It seems the artwork for singles and the EP is a pretty loud cry to your outlook on the issues. Who does the artwork for you and what do you hope fans and people in general walk away with everything to do with the band? I thought it was important to keep things consistent with our message, at least for this cycle of songs. All our artwork is done by our friend Buster O’Connor. I basically give him free reign. I don’t like to impinge creatively on others. That especially includes Lu, Kevin Horne (our lead guitarist) and Albert Cruz (our drummer). I hope that the art just adds to the message, and listeners are encouraged to get help, should they need it. 🎼 With everything about the music and your story that is being brought to life through the songs you also have grouped together a bunch of talented musicians to form PHARMACOSE. How did you all meet and what was the biggest gem you found in each member to make them a fit into this band? I mentioned earlier how I got together with Lu. For a while it was just us. We were in the studio when we could be, but we had to work nights and weekends mostly, so it took a lot of time to get things down. Lu has known Albert for years, and we initially used him just to track drums, but there came a point where we wanted to get a live act going, so he joined. Albert comes from a progressive rock background, so he adds some technicality to our playing. I think he has put together some interesting parts that add a lot of musicality to our music. I later found Kevin on Craigslist, and he’s been with us ever since. Kevin comes from more of a metal background, and I love it. He gives us an edge that I think we need, given our subject matter. For whatever reason, sometimes we I write something, it can end up being a little softer than what I had originally meant. I think Kevin’s background gives it the push it needs to sound a bit harder. 🎼 One song that truly stood out for me on the record was I KEEP DREAMING OF THE SUN. what inspired this song and how easy was the creative process to get this song finished? We recorded that song about the same time I came up with the name Pharmacose, so it sort of represents the headspace I mentioned earlier about coming up with the name of the band. Whereas the song “The Clearing” ends up sounding a little more optimistic, I Keep Dreaming of the Sun is more on the pessimistic side. It’s the yin and yang. It comes from an angry and resentful set of emotions that I think are only natural. For me, the optimism has won out, but there are always those residual negative emotions that you have to take in stride. That song was also the first song we wrote and recorded as a band, so I think it has a unique vibe to it. It sounds a little metal, but the verse is a little on the lighter side; it illustrates the diversity of our music backgrounds. 🎼 Since this EP is a Vol. 1 do you have creative ideas already for either another EP or a full-length album and if so, do you feel the music and vibe will stay pretty true to what we hear on this disc? Part 2 is done! We will release our first single, “Does It Matter?” from Part 2 on 7/3, so it’s coming soon! I think you’ll hear a similar vibe in the music, but in contrast with Part 1, Part 2 speaks to what I went through more indirectly. For instance, our first two singles deal more with relationships, both distant past and more recent past. There is also “Smash,” which is a little more abstract. It deals more with some interesting metaphysical ideas that I’ve come across. 🎼 Lastly, anything new on the horizon for PHARMACOSE with more releases or videos or live stream stuff happening and where can people buy or stay up to date with your band? I mentioned that we will start releasing songs for Part 2 in July. We’ll release that EP in the fall, and toward the end of the year we are going to put Parts 1 and 2 together to complete the full record. We’ll also add some bonus tracks to it. Our second video, for “The Clearing,” just came out 6/9 also. So, we have a lot of material coming out and we are writing more material for next year as well! The album is entitled UNSTABLE the bands first single is called I’M NOT ALRIGHT and just these words can supply moments and emotions we all have had throughout 2020 so far. The band-Josh Fore, Ryan Lerner, Ruben Limas and Diamond Rowe honed in on this 2020 release to bring a heavier and sonic explosion to the already pretty intense sound they had. The band formed a few years back with this unified lineup and in 2017 released FREAK which helped the band build a successful following and respect in the music community. A band that believes in embracing flaws and showcasing delicate prominent issues in the lyrical content. This band is guaranteed to wreak havoc once UNSTABLE explodes onto the scene this year. I had the pleasure to get to know Diamond Rowe lead guitarist and backing vocals of the band to find out about the writing of the album, the bands well known live shows and what her band members have taught her. 🎼 I’M NOT RIGHT, your new single was the first song you wrote for your sophomore album UNSTABLE and it showcases the heaviness you bring to the stage to your album sound. Was this a huge focal point you wanted to hone in on this time for the newest record? Diamond: Absolutely. Josh and I started Tetrarch in middle school to some capacity so we have had a long time to really perfect our live show. I have absolute faith that on stage, we can convert almost anyone into a Tetrarch fan so essentially we always want to make sure that we captivate that same energy and charisma on the actual record. Our goal is to make the audience and listeners FEEL something. When we went into this record and started talking with producer Dave Otero, we emphasized from the beginning how big we wanted this album to sound. We didn't want to cut any corners and we wanted it to be huge. I think we nailed it for sure. 🎼 TETRARCH is from Greek origins; are you guys big history buffs and what does the band name mean to you 4? Diamond: Josh and I actually decided on the name in like 9th grade during history class haha. Our teacher said it and we were like hmm lets try that. It has stuck ever since. Its a kingdom/government ruled by 4 people and there are 4 of us in the band so it was fitting. We are DEFINITELY not history buffs though haha! 🎼 Lyrically on the new single you have explored a topic a lot of people can relate to. What inspired the lyrics to I’M NOT ALRIGHT? Diamond: You know, we have always been a band that believes in manifesting things that you want to happen. So with this song we really wanted to take on that feeling of rock bottom that most people feel at some point and how you can hate that feeling so much that it drives you to become the best version of yourself. Thats where the line "Looking in the mirror and I hate myself" comes from. That moment you realize that you just don't like who you have become. 🎼 You’re a band who embraces flaws and tries to show the positivity from them, as a band with a platform what do you hope your music and words do for fans or just people in general struggling? Diamond: We just want everyone to realize that they are human. Own all of your flaws and embrace them. What makes everyone so special is that were all different. Being the same is boring and were a band that embraces differences in all walks of life. 🎼 With that being said I’M NOT RIGHT showcases a topic a lot can relate to. Why was it so important for you guys to bring this to the video? Diamond: Well, we have definitely been known to be the band that always talks about persevering through hard times or adversity but with this song and record in general we really wanted to show the other side of that. We wanted to show that we are human and things WILL get tough sometimes. They do for everyone, but its how you work through those issues and take control of your life that really matters in the end. As human beings, sometimes we look in the mirror and just don't like the person that we see staring back at us and are ready to make a change. Thats what that song is about. 🎼 On a scale from 0 to 2020, how good is your new album compared to your last? Diamond: Thats a tough question. They are just different. FREAK was a great album and did a lot for this band. It really put us on the map and I think we really solidified our place in the metal world with that album. We honestly just look at UNSTABLE as a continuation of that. We took some of the best parts of the last album and matured even more and I think we really have something special. With UNSTABLE we really had a goal in mind and knew exactly what we were going for before we even stepped foot in the studio. I think you can really hear that. 🎼 If you could take a lesson to strengthen your musical style or playing ability who would you want to teach you and why? Diamond: You know - I cant honestly think of one particular person because I feel like anyone can learn something from so many different places. There are so many different places 🎼 I have heard from numerous people your live show is jaw dropping and most people who have never see you once your set is done you have utterly blown them away. When you hear stuff like that how does that make you feel, and what brings out the emotion and intensity for you when you hit the stage? Diamond: We take a lot of pride in our live show. It has always been the most important aspect to us of this band. I think we were fortunate enough to start this band at a time where bands really had to bust their ass in the local circuit playing shows and touring and learning how to be real bands without the internet. Josh and I met in 7th grade, so we essentially started playing music from that point on and had a lot of time to practice and get other musicians that felt the same and really take pride in our performance as a whole. It is very important for us to be the best ENTERTAINERS as we can be as well as musicians. People pay to come see us put on a show and a show is what we vow to give them. 🎼 UNSTABLE is coming out this fall, working on the follow up to FREAK did you guys have any pressure on yourselves to create? Did you utilize new approaches of creating this time around or did you stick with what worked on the first one? Diamond: I think theres always some sort of pressure when creating a new record because naturally we want it to be very good but with this record we wanted to make sure that when we came out of the studio that we were 100% happy with everything. We didn't want to rush and cut corners which is why we spent almost 4 months tracking and mixing. We absolutely stuck with certain approaches that worked on the last record but adding some news ones that really pushed the boundaries of what this band can do. I think everyone is going to be really pleased with what we have created this time around. 🎼 What is one thing each of your band members have taught that has inspired you as a musician or on a personal level? Diamond: Thats a really good question. We learn a lot from each other everyday and I think all of our personalities play a very important roll in the progression of this band in different ways. From Josh I learn to look on the bright side sometimes and enjoy certain moments. i am very forward thinking all the time and sometimes I get in the way of myself enjoying the accomplishments along the way because of that. Josh really teaches me to learn to enjoy the ride and that sometimes its ok to just stop and smell the roses. Ruben continues to remind me to have passion for my instrument. It is truly inspiring to see how much he practices and genuinally loves his instrument. He plays drums for hours and hours everyday, no matter how much were touring. I have that same passion for guitar but sometimes I get caught in the weeds with the business side of things and Ruben always shows me that the music aspect and being the best I can be at my instrument is just as important. Lastly, Ryan teaches me a good bit about self discipline and structure. I tend to sit somewhere in the middle when it comes to spontaneous and organized - Ryan is very structured and there has been several times where his organization and scheduling has helped us on tours. He's always very prompt and likes to be prepared, so he definitely teaches me the benefits of that. 🎼 What is the most useless talent you have? Diamond: This is honestly the perfect question for our singer/rhythm guitar player, josh! Hahah! He's the worthless talent guy of the band. He's that guy that knows how to Juggle and do magic tricks. I, however am one of those people that I absolutely hate wasting my time on things that I feel don't benefit me at all so I tend to shy away from those things hahaha! Maybe its just laziness! I guess I will have to at least learn one thing thats useless for the next time I am asked this question. 🎼 If you could live off of one food on tour what would it be? Diamond: My favorite food in the entire world is Buffalo Wings. I absolutely love them. So they would have to be in first place. Close second would be Mexican food or Pizza. None of those are good for you at all which is just a shame. 🎼 Cat or dog person? Diamond: I am 100% a dog person haha. I have a dog named Ozzy and I love him so so much! haha! I laugh all the time thinking that we rescued him from the Atlanta Humane Society for only $150. SOO cheap considering how much joy he has brought my life. He is spoiled ROTTEN but I guess thats my fault haha! 🎼 What does the TETRARCH fans mean to you and what is one thing you want them to know? Diamond: The fans mean everything to us. We have learned over the years of being a band that the most important thing that any band has is their fans. Without them we are nothing. We always want them to know that we remember that and that we always care about what they think and feel. Yes, we create music that we love and for ourselves but we also create music for them and hope they enjoy it. They have built up a positive outlook to the fans and the music community. They have given hope and encouragement and laughs through being real and approachable on social media outlets for people to connect with them. Recently the guys covered Bob Segers song TURN THE PAGE, a Song endearing to them as musicians and that has inspired them through their career and they wanted to share this acoustic moment with a video to the fans during this pandemic of 2020. Each band member is missing the connection of live shows and are sending out a message as soon as they get the green light they will be on the road to come and hang out and rock the stages for fans and music lovers. The band has been deemed Loudwire’s Best New Artist in 2016. They have released 3 Eps and several standalone singles since the band’s inception. The video for RENEGADE (a Styx cover) held the #1 spot for 5 weeks; retired in the Battle Royal Hall of Fame on Loudwire. The bands social media accounts continue to grow and have over millions of views. In 2019 the guys proudly released a full-length album entitled SAINTS & SINNERS which produced the amazing prominent song for this day and age called NOT ALONE and the high energy, sultry rocker SOUND THE ALARM. The guys, Eric Boatright-vocals, Heath Fields-drummer, Seth Trimble-guitars and Matt Daniels-bass are super talented, amazing and fun humans and just overall a truly special addition to the rock n roll community for this generation. I was able to chat with bassist Matt Daniels during the Quarantine of 2020 to find out about new music, the Seger cover they did and found out some fun facts about the front man. What message do you want to give to the world now? MATT: The song was written in regards to people struggling with depression, feelings of anxiety and loneliness along with several other mental struggles that we face daily. The song itself is an acknowledgment that we are imperfect beings, and it is okay to accept that we have faults and imperfections, but you have to work through those to come out a better version of yourself. It is our responsibility as people to do so, and the message we try to convey is that no matter how bad it gets, you're never alone. There is always a friend, family member, person on the street or in your timeline that may share a similar story who would love to reach out and give you a hand. With COVID-19 it really gives the song a whole new deeper meaning, with unemployment at an all-time high, and most of the world forced to be alone, this song truly takes on a much deeper meaning. If we could give any further words, it's that we all are afraid, but together we are strong. You see that from the videos from Italy, where people playing concerts from their balconies, or in major cities in the US where every night we scream and cheer for the healthcare workers fighting this pandemic. No matter how dim the situation may look, our will to continue on will always be brighter. 🎼 When you listened to TURN THE PAGE by Bob Seger what made you relate to the song? How does it feel singing and putting your talents to something that meaningful? MATT: The song itself is legendary, and we have all been big Seger fans to begin with, so we've always played the song and enjoyed it quite often on the road. Being kept in social distancing at home really made all of us miss each other, and the shows, and the fans so we wanted to do something special for them. Recording this cover was definitely one of those things that helped us to look forward to when music makes a full comeback. But for now, we will keep creating, and keep releasing content for our friends and family. 🎼 Have you guys worked on new original music for possibly a new record? If so, how is it writing apart through this quarantine or is that normal for you guys? MATT: We have always been writing, it's never been a formal situation where we all meet and have an intent to write. Most of the time we play music to begin with, and that's where most of our inspiration comes from, is real life events and situations where we pick up a guitar after a long day and start playing a melody, we all hear the melody and add in one by one. 🎼 Your also as band so involved and real with your fans even before all the Covid 2020. How does it make you feel bringing a little part of happiness and positivity into people's worlds? MATT: We love it so much; without our fans we wouldn't be able to do what we do. We enjoy them just as much, getting out and playing shows for us is like a big family reunion. We had a natural desire to want to take that step into making people feel a little bit of that normalcy again, even if we are at home the internet helps us all stay connected. 🎼 What is your view on the future of the music world and community? MATT: I personally think while this time is definitely hard, it will result in a major outpouring of fantastic music, events and concerts. I like to think that the demand for shows is going to be so much higher that we will definitely have a surge in live music again, it's just a matter of when that tipping point begins. 🎼 Top 5 things you learnt about yourself in the past few months? MATT: 1) I knew I had a terrible sleep schedule, but now I REALLY have a terrible sleep schedule. 2) Man, those kids on Xbox Live are bullies...they're ruthless. 3) Even though gyms are closed most of us still managed to stay active, physical activity is most definitely essential. 4) Same with music, it has been very therapeutic being home, watching concerts on TV with my family and am thankful for a chance to reset. 5) I may be 6'2 and 220lbs...but I miss crowd surfing and gigantic mosh pits. Let's bring live music back baby! 🎼 How are staying physically active during quarantine? MATT: I built up a gym in my home and have not skipped a beat, in fact have seen some great progress from being at home. 🎼 Top thing you’re going to do when quarantine is over? MATT: Definitely just sit at the beach and enjoy this weather, us Chicagoans don't get enough warm weather and when it's here you really have to bask in the moment. 🎼 Best Netflix show? MATT: I loved watching Ozark, may have finished it in 2 days but hey what are you going to do. 🎼 Last comments or any new merch or news coming soon from the SHALLOW SIDE camp?
